Porto Santo is an island of rare beauty, quite different from Madeira, in spite of its proximity. Its main attraction is a beach nine kilometres long, washed by a deliciously calm, limpid, deep-blue sea. It is known as the “golden isle, because of its arid landscape full of warm shades of brown and yellow. The island was named by Portuguese discoverers after many days at sea. (The name literally means “blessed port”).
